Do they ever eat ? It has been about a week and I haven't seen her eat or drink. Maybe she's doing it early before I go outside.

They do...you just don't always see them [IMG] My broody would get up quickly and eat, drink, dust and poop in 15 minutes or less! She did it all in high speed to get back to her nest! You can't miss the broody poo,,,it smells awful [IMG]

Typically, they get off the nest once every 24 hours. They eat, drink and poop, and may dust bathe or forage as well,. Usually they return to the nest within 20 minutes or so, maybe 30. Typically, there will be one "broody poop" left outside the nest which is unusually large and stinky.

Occasionally a hen never gets up -- and if she doesn't, she will die. Put some winter gloves on if needed, and pick her up, and see if there is poop in the nest. If there is, she is not getting up.

A broody typically is secretive about when she leaves the nest, so you are not likely to see her off it.
They will wait til no one is around.

She did get off the nest today, because I went in to clean the coop and she got mad and tried to get me LOL but she didn't eat or drink, just got back on the nest .[IMG] Oh, she left me a large turd, also.

Like Judy said, they usually get off when no one is around...she was chasing you off...LOL[IMG] I would just keep an eye on her and make sure she is still looking healthy. When I did see my broody get up, she didn't eat or drink a lot. I just made sure she had food and water in her broody area...far enough away that she had to get up but close to her nest. When are her eggs due to hatch?

Well, its only been about a week, so it takes about 21 days, right ? She is only on 3 eggs, and not all were put in there at the same time. Is that OK ?? So many questions ! They aren't her eggs. I've been taking them from my other chickens that are in with the rooster.

Yes...about 21 days from the time she is sitting all day. I wouldn't add any more eggs. You really want them to hatch about the same time. When they start hatching, your broody will continue to sit on those eggs until they hatch or she quits feeling they won't hatch and begin taking her babies out and about. If the hatch dates are too far apart...she will either continue to sit on the remaining eggs, which then you worry about her taking care of the new babies OR she will abandon the remaining eggs to take care of her new chicks. If they are within a 3 day period of being due, then it should be ok. Broodies are so much fun and adorable to see them with their babies [IMG]

also....There are a couple broody hen threads on here as well that if you post up questions they will help you out [IMG] Nice group of people and very knowledgeable about caring for broodies [IMG] I have learned a lot from them...only hatched with a broody for about a year now so still learning!
