They cluck, growl when disturbed,and walk around ruffed up with wings down. The number of eggs they will brood can be anywhere from 0 (they will brood an empty nest) to 12+ eggs. When a hen stick to a nest day and night she is broody.

Then, possibly, she is going broody.

Does she have a nest with eggs? If she is going broody it could be soon. Some of my hens have gone broody with no warning what-so-ever. Others have walked around, puffed up and growling?clucking for days before they settled down. One never did settle down to brooding full time.

I leave eggs as they are laid or replace them with dummies when I want a broody. If you know which nest box she uses consider leaving a few eggs in it. Dummy eggs if it is a communal nest. Lea Presenting a hen with a nest of eggs WILL NOT make a hen go broody, but it does provide inducement.
