I had a broody hen a couple of weeks ago and after separating her in a broody breaking cage, she came out of it after a few days. While I am very glad she is no longer broody, she hasn't laid an egg for a week now. I'm wondering if it's normal for them to stop laying after they've been broody? How long should it take for her to start laying again? Thanks a million!!!!

I had a broody who took a while (several weeks) to start laying again after she hatched her eggs. I think it's pretty normal b/c they stop laying eggs when they go broody and then it takes them a little while to get back going again.

COMPLETELY normal.

How long it takes to return to lay can vary depending on HOW long they were broody for and such... Usually about a week for those who break right away. Broodyness AND laying are both effected by hormones and they don't seem to change just instantly. :)

You should be back in eggs soon! :thumbsup

My broody's that actually hatch or raise chicks... usually take at least 5 weeks before returning to lay... or close to the time she is getting ready to boot them. :)

Could take a week or two....or if she's ~18 months old and you'rein the northern hemisphere... she could go into a molt and not lay again until that's over with and the day get longer again.

Oddly, many of my broody's (who are allowed to sit and raise a clutch) actually have little mini molts while they are raising their young... and have never done a "normal" yearly molt... it may be an undiscovered side benefit of broody's... doing their molt when they already aren't laying! :yesss:
