We have two sizzle hens hatching some eggs. Both have hatched two chicks. One mama is super gentle with her chicks, but the other is pecking at the chicks every time they come out from under her. Is this normal or should we give the chicks to the nice mama?

This is our first time hatching with bloody hens so we are not sure.

Any advice is welcome.

Thanks

How old are the chicks? Hens will eventually "dump" their babies when they are old enough. They do this by pecking them.

Is she taking care of them otherwise? If she is slacking off on all her duties, I would try giving the babies to the nice hen. But, remember, the chicks will have already bonded with "mom" and they may not accept their new mom.

They are only a day old. If they were older I would assume she is letting them go on their own, but every time they come out she picks at them. I was thinking about giving the chicks to the nice one. I will keep an eye out and if she looks like she is hurting them I will make an exchange.
