Is it common for a young (7 or 8 month old) Welsummer hen to go broody? I have one that's sitting on her pretty little egg and making awful noises at anyone or anything coming close to her. She usually just drops her eggs and make a terrible fuss for a while to tell us it's ready.

I'd love to dash off to Trader Joe's and pick up a dozen fertilized eggs and give her a try at setting. What do you think?

give it a few days, some chickens will "think" about setting but after a few says give up and get off the nest, so I would definetly wait to see if she has actually committed to setting on the nest before I go buy any eggs for her to set on.

Good tip. The little goofball sat on her egg all day, right up until I got her a broody coop built out of leftover supplies. Then she hopped up merrily and left the egg.
