I have 10 ladies about 1 year old. Lately 2 of them have been sitting daily/nightly in the same nest. They do the growling I have heard about. I respect them and let them stay as they have water and food they can get to. My question is...I do not have a rooster so is this possible? Are they broody? I thought they only did this when there was a rooster around to make babies.

They can definitely go broody without a rooster. If you want to break them (which I recommend if you don't want to put fertile eggs under them), the best way is to put them in a wire bottom cage somewhere where they can feel the cool wind underneath them.

Good luck.
