How to know if a hen is showing signs of being broody
They'll usually refuse to get out of the nesting box off of the eggs that she or the others have laid before her. They get protective and cranky if you try to literally pry them off of the eggs they're setting on.. be careful!
Mine will also make a low "cluck-cluck-cluck" sound, almost under her breath, all the time. Then she'll fluff up like a turkey to try to intimidate whoever is around.
They will lay out flat in the nesting box, covering more area than normal. I have a girl that's going broody, I opened the nesting box yesterday and she fluffed up and me and squawked like a pterodactyl! This is what she looked like all fluffed up -
I want some hens to go broody but I got a Araucana that sits on her eggs but after about 5-10 mins on the nest all fluffed up then gets up but there is no new eggs sometimes she eats the eggs
