We hatched 5 babies on May 12 (my birthday too) and had 1 little brown baby (along with 4 other healthy, blue, black & barred babies) This chick came from a white egg, making the mother a brown leghorn. With the super fuzzy legs, the father has to be my partridge Cochin. From my understanding, both parent breeds are easily sexed when the chest feathers come in black (I knew at 3 weeks my Cochin was male) Since this chick is getting brown chest feathers, does that indicate female? Does the feather color pass down when the breeds are crossed? We are eating all the male chicks since we have no more room for roosters, and I really want to keep this one. Please someone tell me my Brownie is a little girl!

To add…this chick is the slowest to feather, but my Cochin was as well. Of course, he is male, but I believe Cochins are a slower feathering breed. At first I believed Brownie to be male because of the slower feathering, but my Cochin had a much larger comb by this age. As well as a black chest.

Pretty sure that is a pullet but the wattle growth and color is a little concerning. I would give it a couple of more weeks and reassess at that point.
This is the Cochin. At 6 weeks he was obviously a male. I couldn’t find any baby pics of the leghorn, but I know they are known for large combs too.

Yes. Both partridge Cochin and brown Leghorns have black breasts in the males. But occasionally that coloring doesn't show up for a while. So I'm being cautious at this point but I do think it is likely to be a pullet.
