Brown Speckled eggs and other strange egg happenings

Discussion in 'Chicken Behaviors and Egglaying' started by ole-crone, Sep 19, 2007.

  1. I thought I had figured out which of my hens laid that pretty brown, specked egg that appeared every few days. BUT alas, we moved her out of the main coop area to the retirement center and that egg is still showing up (she's not laying at all it turns out).

Any suggestions about what breed might be the 'culprit'? Our brown egg layers includes Red Stars, probably a RIR (she is at the top of my suspect list, considering it doesn't show up regularly and she is an older hen), Black Stars, a Lt. Brahma, a golden laced Wyandotte, and a turken.

Within the past few weeks we also are finding tiny eggs in the nest box - not much larger than a large jelly bean. So far we've had 3 white eggs and one brown.

Besides the old RIR, the other hens are all @ a year old. Everyone seems healthy and happy. Although we have had some stressful times lately with a tree falling, coop construction, and I suspect some hawk attacks.

Could be any, but one of my RIR girls, going on two years old, lays a pretty dark brown, very speckled egg.
