Hello all,

I was giving my light sussex hen a bath today and a vent feather trim when I noticed significant bruising near her vent. At first I thought it was a scab, but it's almost as though the scab is underneath the skin. She is otherwise well, eating and drinking ok, enjoying treats, foraging with the others, hasnt lost any weight that I can see. She is the lowest on the pecking order and around 2 years old, if that means anything.

I also have a 4 month old cockerel, so wondered if this was some sort of mounting related injury although I haven't seen the cockerel mount at all and to be honest he hasn't matured much (physically or behaviourally).

The flock are wormed with Avitrol Plus tablet and get apple cider vinegar in their water.

I've attached a photo to show you what I mean.

The last time I took a chicken to the vet it cost me $170 so any home/frugal remedies would be very welcome.

Probably peck wounds. I would spend some time quietly observing your flock to see if you see any bullying. Vent picking can be from a protein deficiency. What are you feeding? I recommend at least an 18% protein ration and limiting extra treats.

Why are you giving her a bath?

ACV will not rid worms.

I've got them on a mix of Laucke Red Hen 17% protein and Barastoc Darling Downs 15% at the moment, as their usual feed is currently unavailable, but I'm hoping I can switch back to their usual soon. I'll try and source a 18% in the meantime.

As for why I gave her a bath - she roosts on a lower run and one of her sisters on a higher rung did a really dark, liquidy poop on her so I just washed it off because her dust baths were ineffective.

I'll keep a closer eye on her and make sure there isn't too much bullying.
