Hey are buckeyes really that rare? The place where Im getting a couple of chicks tomorrow has buckeyes. I was leaning more toward a golden laced wyandotte and an aracuana.

??? I was told they were pretty rare at the hatchery where I got my birds...BUT, keep in mind, they were trying to sell me on substituting a Buckeye for some cochins that didn't hatch. I ended up with one (Agate) - but not b/c of the rarity. I read the back story on the breed, and when I found out they were the only breed developed in the U.S. by a woman, my closet feminist got the better of me...[IMG] Agate grew a little slower than my others (Easter Eggers and Golden Laced Wyandottes mostly), and she is a little more timid than the others (but that may be due to her smaller size early on). I LOVE the Easter Eggers...and the Wyandottes are pretty birds (just haven't really developed a personality like the EE). Below is a pic of my Buckeye...with one of the Wyandottes to the right...

Wow you're Wyandotte is beautiful. Im getting one tomorrow! I just lost 5 bantam EE chicks, I am SO bummed out. I got them from My Pet Chicken and the trip was too much for them. I lost four in the first day and a half. Then I had two that were ok, and I got a couple of chicks from a hatchery and one of them had infectious brohchitis, (I just found out from a necropsy today) so it died, and also made my smaller ee chick sick, I lost her this morning. Ive read so much about how cool these ee's are I wanted some so much! Im getting an Ameraucana tomorrow, but its probably really an easter egger, according to everything I read you can only get a true Ameraucana from a breeder. Thanks for your reply!

No worries...and SO SORRY about your Easter Eggers...they seem to be great chickens. In fact, one of my EE was the first to lay an egg a couple of days ago. I think we REALLY lucked out with the mail-order birds we got...our Post Office screwed up and just LEFT THEM ON OUR PORCH (in late March). You might think about searching this forum for some other breeders in your area with EEs. AFTER I ordered mine, I found a gal nearby that raises the most beautiful EE...if I have to replace any of my girls, I'm going straight to her...I've been to her place, and her birds are really well kept (plus, those won't be so stressed out getting them to our place). Best of luck picking your birds tomorrow!

I have a nice 14 week old Buckeye rooster free to someone who's interested. I have another rooster, and 1 rooster is enough for my flock. I am in eastern Washington.
