Generally they use red bulbs to keep the chicks from pecking at each other if one of them happens to get hurt, the red color helps disguise blood. A clear heat lamp will work just as well.. Be sure it's secured well as they have been known to cause fires if the clamp fails and the bulb falls into pine shavings.
You need to make sure your bulb is for use with animals. Using bulbs with Teflon coating can kill your birds as noted in this thread from earlier this winter:

I use a clear one, cause you can see everything better, and I think it's more natural, but the red does disguise blood.
