Hello BYC community! I have noticed the last few days a few bumps on my Plymouth Rock hen’s face - just above her nostril. It’s a bit larger on one side than the other but it is on both sides of the face. It’s a bit soft and looks kind of like a scab but I’m wondering if it may be a respiratory infection? I haven't noticed her sneezing and her behavior hasn’t changed from the usual - still laying eggs and eating. She’s not one to be picked on by the other girls so I don’t think it’s a physical injury from pecking. Thank you for your help!

Hi @TreeChick and welcome to BYC! Sorry that you are having problems with one of your hens.

My first guess was maybe a sinus problem but she doesn't seem to have any nasal drainage. In fact, she is a very healthy looking girl.

One picture looks as though there is a black dot in the center of one of the swellings on the left side of her comb. Any chance she stuck herself on something? The swellings look like they are more superficial.

If she was my hen I would try using some triple antibiotic ointment on them (no pain killing formula. Chickens do not react well to that)

@casportpony, @Wyorp Rock , what do you all think is going on here?

Thank you for your response @microchick I will apply some ointment and monitor her closely. She may have caught it on something sharp - anything is possible! I haven’t noticed any drainage or mucus her nose has been clean and clear.
