I have one funny EE who buries eggs in the nest box. She will lay an egg and afterwards collects pine shavings to bury her egg and any others in that box. Before I realized she was doing this, I would miss the eggs! Now everyday I have to dig for them. [IMG] What is up with this?

She's just trying to keep it safe to eventually hatch out.

I have a few hens who are laying on the ground and I have to dig eggs out from the shavings also. They scratch the shavings up over the makeshift nest and completely cover them.

This is instinct. In the wild, most avians will cover the eggs to prevent predators from seeing them. It also keeps them warm while mom takes a break and heads out for a little snack. She is just displaying primal behavior.
