I just got back from the grocery store, restocking some things from the long weekend. Picked up the butter, and was looking at the label for something else when I saw it:

    "Ingredients: Cream (milk), natural flavors."

I hastily grabbed every brand on the shelf and read the same thing. I might be wrong, but the last time I bought butter it has always read Cream, salt. That's it.

    WHAT'S GOING ON?

I make my own butter... I think Tillamook brand still only uses cream and salt...not sure about the others...but this doesn't shock me at all.

Just last night there was a story on 60 minutes about flavors.
You could probably view it on CBS online.
    It really disturbed me.
It's big business regardless of the product and an effort to give people an addiction to everyday foods or at least cause them subconsciously to buy more of an item.
That's why in my world, food doesn't have ingredients or come from a package.
    ETA
Food is fish, meat, eggs, and plants(fruits/vegetables) unadulterated.
Look at packages of meat and you will be appalled at the number of ingredients. Shouldn't meat be just meat?

Whew. Good thing too. I was sick of my natural butter tasting like natural butter. [IMG]

I know I'm not allowed any food with "natural flavors" as an ingredient because it can be anything, and I'm allergic or sensitive to many foods and chemicals.

I wonder if I can hide a milk goat behind the shed (nope, that's where the hens are hiding). Time to move to that farm...

eta: Our beef is from the farmer DH knows, the eggs come from my suburban back yard, as do an increasing amount of vegetables. Pork and chicken from the supermarket make me ill, even if there are no added ingredients. That and the venison are all my animal products that I eat right now.

My butter has cream and salt. That's it, but I did have to go look.

mom'sfolly, what brand? I'm waiting to buy it until I go to Costco again (but I will read all labels on every single thing).

Wow, hadn't seen this on butter yet. Did you get a "reduced fat" type of butter by accident? Scary stuff. I used to be a HUGE diet soda drinker. About 4 months ago I hesitantly gave it up when I heard it affected your joints (along with all the other bad stuff it does. Apparently it took the joint issue to stop me [IMG]) I have hip displaysia and am unable to really take anything to alleviate the pain right now, so I figured I would give it a shot. Anyway, my hip pain has decreased by at least 30-40%. I attribute it to stopping the diet soda, because absolutely nothing else changed in my diet or lifestyle, and the time line fits too. Scary whats in our food and drink now a days.

I don't want to act like a nutrition nazi even though that's what I am. Anything that comes from a factory or laboratory is foreign to our bodies and despite what the FDA and 'food' manufacturer payrolled doctors nutritionists and scientists will tell you, our bodies do not know how to process them (ever hear of cancer?).
We have not changed genetically in a significant way from paleolithic man and before you put something in your mouth, think about whether a cave man would have encountered it.
Put the soft drinks, candy, chips and twinkies down and back away slowly.
Have some green beans, an egg, a steak, a pineapple and plain water for something to drink.

It was the Cabot's Farm "Natural" butter of all lines, the store brand of butter, salted and unsalted (btw, unsalted does too have salt added), and another brand I don't remember the name of. I don't mess with fake fats/reduced fats.

Right now I'm on a juice cleanse. Herbal teas, fruits, veggies, herbs, and green leafy things from the garden. Not even any grains or meat, eggs, especially never milk (allergic).
