Is it normal for a male to chase and peck at a female when they are just learning how to mate? Because he's either turned into a maniac and he's chasing her around trying to catch her (with a few feathers coming off) or he's decided it's time to mate and she just isn't interested. I'm wondering if I should move her (supposed to be a her...check https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=116453&p=1 picture 2)

Quote:males can be really mean to hens (and to other males as well). They can even kill hens. If all thosenew birds you got used to be ina collony, that male may have had a different mate. And according to what i've been told in the past, in the wild buttons are like doves, they find a mate and stay with it unless it dies....so it may be traumatizing for birds to be force paired up whcih is why i assume most collony breed to let them pick and choose their womens lol! Others strictly pair them up, and I guess yes, just let nature take it's course.

These two have been together for.... over a month now. I got them when they were just off of needing a heat lamp but I'm not sure exactly how old they are. I haven't blended any of the new ones with the ones I already had. I didn't want to cause any power struggles when they hadn't even gotten used to there new surroundings. I haven't decided if I'm going to do colonies or seperate breeding pairs...the colors intrigue me. I need to find a book or list w/ pics of all the colors..both male and female! [IMG] [IMG]
