I have 9 six week old button quail. 3 of them being white, solid white. How do you tell if they are hen or roo when they are solid colored?

    Hi Tiffany~
Well, other than watching their behaviors and listening for crowing, you can try to vent-sex them. The females have a bigger vent than the males (pick one of your colored males to compare) and if you flip them over and gently squeeze on either side of the vent, a male's anatomy will pop out. It's small, but will be noticeable compared to a female.
I had one white one too, and I thought it was a female until I saw it mating... I was wrong. :|

I'd never done it before, either... it's not hard, just takes practice.

Psst... just don't squeeze TOO hard... [IMG]

[IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] Ok, just for the record, I am not good a vent sexing. I have no idea what in the world I was looking at other than a quail's butt!!! I compared my male to my female and lordy I couldn't tell the difference. I didn't see any thing"pop" out either other than poop..[IMG] [IMG]

You have to sort of pinch on either side of the vent and try to turn it inside out... [IMG] it's hard to do. [IMG]

If you see/hear any of them "laughing" at you, those are likely males... whistle TWEEEE twee twee...
