I'm new to this so might be stupid question. I want 6 chickens, 2 delewares,2 orpington and 2 Wyandotte. But I would like to buy chickens not chicks. Can this be done?

Sure, try Craigslist or hit up a local farm animal or poultry swap meet in your area... But, beware you run a much higher risk of bringing home or passing on disease and infection when you get adult birds, thus you will need to set up quarantine cages if you don't get them all from one place...

You also might be able to find someone willing to raise them for you and deliver them as layers for a price...

Yes, you can purchase grown chickens - it is just a matter of finding a seller. This can be done by purchasing 'started birds/point of lay pullets" from certain hatcheries (be aware the shipping costs for mature birds is quite high) or by finding someone local to you with birds they want to sell (facebook groups, craigslist, visiting the "state" thread for your area here on BYC and networking with fellow BYCers).

As you seem to be new to the keeping of chickens I would suggest you find someone with some experience who can help you sort out healthy from unhealthy birds or, at the very least, familiarizing yourself with the big things to be on the lookout for - this is especially helpful if you source them from auction, swap, etc --- though even private sellers can be rather unscrupulous.

Thank you, I didn't see a state thread. I'm in Missouri if that helps any. Are there breeders in MO?
