We have lost all of our flock the past couple of months from various predators since our German shepherd went missing in August. I'd like to buy some chicks so that we can start getting eggs by summer (the chicks we had were just barely starting to lay). Has anyone ordered chicks during the winter and how did that go? We live in central Texas, so it doesn't get terribly cold, but I'm worried they won't survive the shipping? Should I just wait until warmer weather? Thanks in advance!

I just got my babies at the beginning of December ordered through tsc! They are a little older than 4 weeks now, mostly feathered, and living outside in a brooder box. I live in east TX, Terrell to be precise, i was excited to get them but it is not the easiest to care for them constantly in the cold. (Man i want a broody hen) last night was the first night ive brought them back in in a couple weeks... 12 4 week old chicks stink FAST.

So in answer... I love my chicks and excited to jump start the laying time by getting them now but.. Its cold.

I was concerned about getting the EE, I've heard they can have a lot of issues? But I'd love to have some pretty eggs too....

Start now. That will but you in eggs by June. Texas has year round hatcheries so not too hard to find a nice selection of chicks. Might not be every breed you are looking for but enough to start. You might have to order more than you need (25) but in my experience, it's super easy to sell 10-20 week old pullets.
A local feed store orders chicks year round from Privett. They get shipped usps to freezing colorado. The risks must be minimal because she's followed this same gameplan for 10+ years

My first batch came from TSC. Second shipped from Meyers. I recommend both considering I received healthy, thrifty chicks.

I guess it all depends on how many you want to order?
