BYC's 2025 Spooktacular Halloween Hatch-Along

You won't be able to hear them peep at all, no matter how close you hold the egg to your ear, until they pip internally. They physically can't peep before that because they aren't breathing air up until then.
This makes sense cause I heard chirps last night and see pips today

I've never taken apart my brooder because I raised multiple batches of chicks in April, then a batch in June-july, and then hatched 2 in Sept who are 4 weeks old now, and now the new chickies are gonna come out! Chicken math... I said I wanted 5 chickens and ended up with soon to be 30-32 (including roos Im gonna rehome). Anyway, does anyone have tips to introduce newborns to 5 weeks olds or do I really badly need to completely segregate them?

RIP to that beautiful carpet, lol.
Those are washable rugs. I got them after my first batch of chicks got shaving everywhere. I ended up clogging my dishwasher cleaning feeders and waterers when I was half asleep one night and not paying attention.

I have two sets and wash them every 3-4 days. They're low pile so, most of the poop flakes off when its dry, I hose off the rest and then toss them in the washer.

Young chicks that aren't breeding yet don't really care who is in the flock. The smaller chicks could get bullied though. I'll see if I can find the thread I started when I had the same question.
