Sorry for the kinda dumb question. I have a female golden layer that a few weeks ago I heard quack is fully feathered in duck plumage that now has a drake call and what looks to be a curly drake tail feather. Is this possible and will a fake drake lay eggs or will be able to fertilize females. Sorry just confused about this as it's my first group of ducks. They were all vent sexed by Metzer .
    Thanks in advance

Welcome to BYC.. even Metzers staff can make mistakes ever seen the videos where they are sexing? boy are they fast. As for Golden Layer I don't know anything about them so can't say but does sound like you just happened to get a drake duckling along with the rest of your order.

Ducks can't turn into drakes, there have been hermaphrodite ducks, but that is extremely rare. It looks like Metzer made a mistake, sexing is never 100 % accurate, they move so fast, they could easily make a mistake. I love my Khaki Campbell drake. He is calm, quiet and is very gentle with the ladies. Are you going to keep him?

Here is GingerSnap - after his 4 month molt his feathers were very different, and he is the softest, fluffiest bird in the bunch. (he's the one flapping his wings)

Yes I am but it is mostly because I let my family name them. I'm considering starting a egg business and got the ducks as more research and I knew my family would turn them into pets. Though next spring I'll have a couple dozen eggs a week to sell . I already have customers that have found me when I got them. My wife's boss wants some weekly because her son has reactions to chicken eggs but is fine with ducks. I refer to this group as the pet flock. So when I order a 100 in the future they won't be pets.

Do you charge for your eggs and how much? Mine are maturing and have a few people that would like to buy them but didn't know what to charge. It looks like I have 4 females and 4 males probably have to find new homes for at least two males. And also do I need a license to sell the eggs? I was told I would have to take candleing classes and take a test. I am new to all this. Thanks.

It depends on what the local laws are they are really lax here in Minnesota at the hippie grocery store duck eggs are 12 dollars a dozen. When I start selling mine I'll charge 7 dollars a dozen with a 50 cent deposit on the carton when you bring it back you get your 50 cent back. Then see were it goes from there because with the population dynamics here its a very good market.

Just wanted to add a few pics of him today, you can tell that hybrid 300 goldens are at least part Rouen. [IMG][/IMG]
