Can anyone help out a newby sex these Brahma x Plymouth Rock chicks.

Looking at purchasing a couple of Brahma x Plymouth Rock chicks but don't have a clue how to determine the sex. I currently have a Brahma rooster so looking for pullets.
The attached pictures about 10 weeks.

Do you know if the mom was the Barred Rock or the Brahma?

Is the black bird in the last photo from the same parents as the rest?

If so, that would mean mom was the plymouth rock, and she is the only pullet.

If she's just one that snuck in, since the rest are barred it's pretty likely dad is the plymouth rock, and the chicks aren't sexlinked.

The breeder says they "have Brahma roosters and one cross Brahma rooster and have both Brahma and Plymouth hens they were running together when one started sitting".

It means you can tell gender at hatch. The barring gene is carried on the Z sex chromoome (males have two (ZZ) females have one (ZW)) so If you cross a non barred rooster over a barred hen (in this case it would be brahma rooster x barred rock hen) you will get sexlinked chicks, males will be barred so any chicks with a head spot and barring are male, and any birds that do not carry the barring gene are female.

But that only works if it"s a non-barred rooster over barred hen, it wouldn't work if you crossed a Barred plymouth rock rooster over a light brahma hen for example.

Thanks, gets a little confusing doesn't it, pity not as simple as sexing our horses and dogs. Will try to get more info from the breeder.

Those chicks aren't sex links, and I think most are cockerels. The only way I would buy from this seller would be if I could see them all together and then pick the ones I wanted, at the seller's farm. Then pick the ones that have smaller combs by comparison to the others.

In the 5th picture, the group shot, you can tell the difference. There are three larger, older chicks. The two in front are cockerels, most likely. The one in back looks to be a pullet. The smaller chicks are too young to tell, so it would be a crapshoot with them.

Hard to tell for sure but it does appear from the pictures you do have some males. Good luck and have fun...
