Can anyone recommend good children's books about chickens?

I don't know where to post this, but we're getting new chicks in early April from Meyer and my 1st grader is eager to read all she can about chickens. I've seen the Gail Demerow book, but it's really for older kids and I'm wondering if anyone can recommend some good picture books. A "how-to" book would be nice, but even just some stories featuring realistic chickens and/or kids caring for them would be perfect.

While I'm at it, I'll put in a HUGE plug for The Rooster and the Fox by Helen Ward. It's a picture book retelling of Chaucer's Chanticleer story. She used only heritage breeds of livestock in her illustrations, including dozens of chicken breeds, and has a key in the back discussing the various breeds. I stumbled across it at my local library and it's my kids' current favorite.

    Anyone else have ideas? Thanks!

One of my favorite chicken stories is Hedgie's Surprise by Jan Brett ! It is a lovely story about a hen wanting to hatch out babies and her friend Hedgie has to help her protect her eggs. It may not have realistic pictures but is a great story ! just FYI ! [IMG]

Thanks for mentioning Tillie Lays an Egg! I have a list of my favorite picture books featuring chickens on my chickenkeeping.com web site.

And your child might like watching my bunny who lives with our hens. She's sometimes quite mischievous! See this at my live hencam.

My son just got one from the library called
    Cock a Moo Moo!

It's at about a 3 year old level, but it's very cute.

Thanks for the ideas, the Tillie book looks especially good!

In case anyone else is following this thread, a friend passed along a WONDERFUL picture book called Gemma and the Baby Chick by Antonia Barber. It's a beautifully illustrated picture book about a little girl and her mom who rescue and hatch a "leftover" egg after the hen's other chicks have hatched and she's left the nest. Really lovely, and a nice realistic portrayal of farm life.

Just bought Three Hens and a Peacock from Amazon.com. It's a very humorous "life story" tale with a peacock, three hens, and a very wise farm dog.
It was written by Lester Laminack and illustrated by Henry Cole. I highly recommend it, and, no, I don't know anyone associated with the book.
    (Recommended for ages 4-8).
