My ducks (crested rouen colored male, matching uncrested female and a magpie male) are being wintered in a small pen in the barn. I was very surprised today to find a nest of 12 eggs. She must have covered them all this time as I never saw them until today. Wondering as they still have a small heated bowl to drink out of if the eggs could be fertile. Don't ducks breed in the water? I haven't seen any mating activity during chores. Ducks belong to my 5 yr old grandson and he will be some excited if baby ducks are possible.

Don't worry, ducks can breed without a swimming area. I have seen two of my white pekins mate out in their yard.

I know that it may be weird because they spend most of their day in water but the only water thay absolutely need is drinking water they can dip their entire heads in. The eggs you have will most likely hatch with the great number. Hope they do:)!!! The ducks should be fine without swimming water.

They can and will breed without water,it looks really awkward if you have seen it and it makes you laugh really hard too

Well awesome, I just told my grandson and he's excited. I didn't realize she lay this early tho, didn't have time to remove the male magpie. Can't find a mate for him anywhere. Oh well I guess we get to play "who's your daddy!" LOL
