So I built my chicken run, 4 ft of poultry wire burried 12" into the ground with bird netting over the top, and I have a chicken coop made from a large dog house that is solid with wood floor, one large door on the side to get in to clean and a smaller door in the front that will be leading into the run by cutting out the frame from the poultry wire and stapling the wire to the dog house. The small door does not have an actual "door" on it so the previous dog could walk in and out freely. My question is, do I have to put a door on it or can I leave it for them to walk in and out of their coop freely into their secure run? I have made a small drawing to explain what my setup looks like.[IMG]

You need a door so that predators don't come in at night, but you can leave it open during the day so that they can come and go at thier own sweet will.

yeah I know so predators can't get in the coop, but what if my run is completely sealed? could they still get in? the wire is burried, there is netting over the top that is attached to the top of the wire, under the run door is also burried poultry wire and on the inside is going to be a small stone wall to keep things from pushing under it. I mean I can put a door on but it would be easier not to.

I think if the run is completely sealed than it would be fine.

Go for it. Mine put themselves up at night, and I just close the door.

yeah I have silkie bantams so my run is like fort knox [IMG] i haven't put them out yet because they are still young so I have time to finish everything. I am going to plant flowers around the outside edge as well and put large stones along the inside edge.
