does the hen need a buddy? Will it get along with my chickens? Can I keep a Tom with my chickens?
Will the Tom mate my chickens?
Will the Tom mate my chicken
From the wording of your post I am assuming that you have a lone turkey hen. A lone turkey hen may get along with your chickens or she may not depending on the individual hen.
If you want to produce fertile eggs, you will need a tom. It really isn't a good idea to keep a pair of turkeys. It is better for the safety and health of the hen to have 4 - 6 hens for one tom.
It is possible and likely for a lone tom to attempt to mate with a chicken. A healthy chicken should be able to escape unwanted advances from a tom since they are quicker and more agile than turkeys and toms do not tend to grab the back of the neck to control a chicken like a rooster does. If a tom manages to mount a chicken, it usually ends very badly with a squashed chicken.
Oh no! I don't want a smooshed chicken so should I get a Tom or a hen. I currently have No turkeys. Would a Hen protect my chickens?
If you wanted to start breeding I would buy a few more hens first but even if you don't I would still get a hen instead of a Tom because like R2elk said it is not safe to only have one hen with one tom.
Can I have one hen with 4 chickens? No others?
Yes I think that you would be ok with keeping a turkey hen with some chickens. you should try to get a younger one so that it will get along better with the chickens. When I first got my Tom he got out of the coop and the chickens were chasing him around the yard haha. If you get a younger hen though and put her in with or near your chickens when she is about the same size as them they should get along ok.
