Can I use small rocks from my backyard as grit for my hens?

Nothing fancy about grit - -it's small rocks and dirt.

My grandma's chickens don't get grit. They just roam about the yard eating small pebbles and the like. Then again, there are lots of pebbles and small rocks because we had a lot of rock pathways...

They can do without it if they are free ranging and there is good access to dirt and the like. Mine free range, but I still always put out grit and they do use it. Grit is really cheap so I figure why not.

Mine don't get grit b/c they free range and get lots of dirt and pebbles.
