Please help. This is my 2nd year with chickens. My 4 girls from last year are great and this year's 3 chicks are 9 weeks old. They have just finished their 1st bag of chick feed. When I move them to the big girl coop, is it okay if they eat layer food? I buy crumbles. What do I do? How can I keep 2 different feeds in the coop? Thanks!

At nine weeks old, your chicks will probably be ok eating layer feed.

Just feed a grower, flock raiser, or all flock type feed, and offer crushed oyster shell separately for your layers. Birds that aren't laying should not ingest the high calcium content that layer feed has. And layer is too low in protein for growing birds. The grower, flock raiser, or all flock is safe for all chickens, at any age, and may actually help your older hens lay better.
