I read that they are the only domestic duck not derived from a mallard.

I had one as a kid. He was nice most of the time. But when he was in a mood, he could flog you as good as any rooster. I have lovely memories of him. One day the feed barrel was almost empty. I was little so I tipped it on it's side and climbed in to get the feed at the bottom of the barrel. Dickie Duck came in the barrel with me and beat the daylights out my 7 year old body. Ahh! Yes! Trapped in a barrel with a psycho duck. Lovely memories. I am certain not all muscovies are capable of such crimes, but the memories of Dickie Duck have always kept me from getting another.

I have had many types of ducks.. The muscovys seem to be more tolerant of us humans..They seem to be easier to make pets of..

If you are going to eat them they are also delicious.. the males are quite large and very strong..

I have not had any mean ones who flog people..

I never have been flogged by a chicken, turkey or a goose either..
I think the people who get flogged do so because of their demeaner..
If you exude dominance, you will be dominated..

Quote:Your birds are beautiful! I am hoping to find some Muscovies locally. If I have to end up shipping, I will definitely try to get some from you. Do you incubate them or do you let the ducks incubate them?

    Thanks Michele,
Muscovies in the north are slow to go broody so I incubate the eggs earlier in the breeding season and allow my girls to set when they finally get around to it.
Barnyard Muscovies are pretty common...you should be able to find some.
