    Hi,
I use a red heat lamp for heat (duh.) I leave it on all day and all night. My question is can they still sleep OK?

    Thanks!

I'm having problems with this. I just installed a red heat lamp because it's dipping below 0 and I only have 2 birds (I worry about them keeping each other warm). But they never seem to go to sleep! They're inside messing around all night!

So if anyone has any suggestions, I'd be grateful. Do they just get used to it and finally go to sleep? I've ended up turning it off both nights I've used it, but I think it would be nice for them, let alone help me feel better...

    Thanks!

Mine sleep fine w/the red lamps! Alamo...your girls may just have to get use to it...if they're use to darkness at night, it may be a novelty for now being able to see a little...???

My chickens get up very early when i use a red light. I hear them in the coop, late- and they are out in the yard as early as three a.m. pecking at the ground. Granted, they dont venture far from the coop in the dark, but they are still out.
I switched from red light to radiated heat, and now they sleep in. [IMG]

Never stopped mine from catching their zzzzzz's at night. They get one every winter in their coop over their waterer.

The first night I put the heat lamp in my girls avoided it. We put it right above their roosting pole and when I peeked in the window about 10 p.m. they were all on the other side of the pole. Since then, however, every night they are on the pole under the light. I think they just have to get used to it.

I just put one in on Tuesday and my girls do move around and preen and what not till late but then they settle down. I can see them from my bedroom window. They do seem unsettled but have learnt to turn away from the red light and put their backs to it.
I feel so much better that it is on and I leave it on day and night. I would rather them feel tired than freeze to death.
