One of my 1 yr. old heritage RIR hens is having difficulty breathing; I've given her a five-day treatment of Tylan 50 with no effect. Guessing that the cause is e.coli as opposed to mycoplasma. While I do have some oxytetracycline powder on hand, I don't want to have to tube the medicated water into her. I'm afraid that she'll panic and aspirate.

Is it possible to give LA 300 Noroycin injectable orally? And if so, what is the dosage?

Thank you for any answers in advance. She seems to be a bit worse since this morning; I'm worried I'm going to lose her. :(

Thank you for the link! Unfortunately I was unable to get online yesterday evening, so I gave her a 1/2 cc (1/2 ml) orally before seeing your post. Good to know that I can dilute it, though.

Did some more research this morning: Merck Vet manual stated that most strains of e.coli are resistant to oxytetracyclines; amoxicillin (Fishmox) is more effective. I've gone ahead and given her one 250mg capsule. Hoping it doesn't contradict with the LA I gave her last night.

Don't forget that amoxicillin needs to be given at least twice a day. How much dos she weigh?

I weighed her before dosing, she was 4.9 lbs - nearly 5 lbs. One of your old posts (in a blackhead thread) stated the following; does this only apply to blackhead or does it apply to all Fishmox treatments in general?

Fishmox = amoxicillin. Dose is 57 mg per pound orally twice a day.

That seems to be the most common amoxicillin dose. What blackhead thread was it in, 'cause it's not a drug that would be used to treat blackhead, so I need to double check that.

Update:

After three days of amoxycillin twice a day, she appears to be recovering. There is little to no wheezing; she's happier and is back to normal chicken activities. I'm going to continue with a ten-day dose for good measure. :)
