I give my hens laying pellets, but also have been throwing them some scratch feed just to give them something to peck at in their run. I then read an article on this website that scratch feed causes them to be imbalanced and reduces their egg production. Any comments? P.S. Once they get used to laying in their nesting boxes I will free range them and cut out the scratch feed.
Scratch is fine, in small quantities, as a treat. But it only has 8% protein compared to 16-18% in layer feed. So if they are eating a lot of scratch they will decrease their egg production since protein going in = protein (eggs) coming out.
