This might be a foolish idea, but has anybody ever tried to grow grass in the brooding pen? I have been raising chicks on paper towels and it's just so messy. I was thinking about laying down a carpet of grass on the bottom of the cage and seeing if I could just grow the grass and it would absorb the waste... Not sure it's feasible though, they might just kill the grass! But they're quail so not as hard on it as chickens probably

Don't grow it in the brooder, it would turn into a big mess.

You could try growing a couple of flats of grass if you like, something that can be put in and removed (to allow it to regrow). For cleanliness I think paper towels are the easiest.
And make sure to provide grit if the chicks have access to grass.
