Hi backyard chicken community,

Just wanting to call on collective wisdom / experience and see if anyone wants to have a crack at sexing two day old chicks. They are a schmozzle of breeds - so have no idea whether they would have any traits for early sexing such as fast feathering or down patterns etc.

Thought worth recounting what emerged from last batch with same rooster parentage (though different mothers) in case this helps.

Their heritage / history is as follows:

Poh - silkie wyandotte frizzle (as pictured). In a previous hatching, he has thrown two hens and a roo from mixes with an ISA (Cersei) and a NHR (Sansa) - the ISA (Cersei) + Poh threw a straight combed black skinned, five toed boy (Son of Poh) and a black skinned four toed frizzle girl with a wobbly small mulberry straight comb and bouffant crest (Liza Minelli - hen) - also pictured. The NHR (Sansa) threw a five toed straight mulberry combed girl frizzle without bouffant crest (Aditi - hen - also pictured).

The next generation:
Daisy
- mother (of one of the new chicks - not sure which) - Daisy is offspring from a lavender araucana (hen) + wheaten marans x araucana (rooster). She has a straight comb, is pink legged, with whitish lavender plumage and lays a beige coloured egg.

Natasha - mother (of one of the two chicks) - offspring of a blue laced something x araucana + wheaten marans x araucana (rooster) - same father as Daisy. Blue skinned legs, pink pea-like comb, some wheatens characteristic plumage except with some bluish lacing. Lays a green egg.

The new babies which I am hoping to sex:
No 1 baby
- never really seen markings like it - chestnut in colour with gold and dark markings on face. No indication of fast feathering - short little wings with no feathers evident today. Down doesn't look anything like previous throws from the rooster. Looks like could be pea combed....Black skinned.

Baby no 1 (b).jpg
Baby no 1 (a).jpg

No 2 baby - has similar markings to Liza Minelli and Aditi as babies - so similar to previous throws. But with more pronounced helmut pattern evident - and possible beard going on. Straight combed. Comb looks largish. Black skinned. Has some fast feathering on wings at day 1.
Baby no 2 (a).jpg

Haven't checked the toes on them yet. But think no of toes not relevant for sexing?

So any guessed on sexes for Baby No1 and Baby No 2? And any guesses on which baby belongs to Daisy / Natasha?

Impossible to say. The chicks are not sex links so you are going to have to wait until they're a couple of months old to sex them. It's also impossible to say who laid the eggs that produced each chick. Color genetics for mixed breeds aren't reliable.

Btw, I am going with female - both are now showing evidence of the double length wing feathering of girls - but will let you know as they develop :)

Just an update - the little one with the more mottled downy head has turned into a handsome little roo. The other into a beautifully frizzled girl. Pics to follow!
