Can you use chicken wire for your brooder?

    Can you use chicken wire aroundyour brooder? or will the day old chicks get their head stuck in between them?

    Depending on the size, they may be able to escape through the holes when very young. I had to put a second layer across the bottom to keep them inside.

    Would depend on the size of the holes in the chicken wire I suppose. Mine had 1 inch holes so they would have to be pretty small to get through although their head would go through I don't think they would get stuck.I did have a three week old slip through a 2x4 welded wire fence and go exploring.

    Yea the chicken wire i got is 1 in. and im building my brooder right now chicks coming on this week! :)

    Might want a skirt of cardboard or something on it to keep the bedding inside it too. They throw it everywhere digging in it.
