Candling Questions

I am a beginer to incubating and had some questions. Here they are:

1. Is it absolutely necessary to candle?
2. I'm planning on candling the eggs so what should I look for on around day 7?
3. In what position should I hold the eggs while candling?

I'm sure I will think of some more question so I'll just post when I think of them. Thanks!
