I have been dealing with a bunch of predators. I know there is a huge coon, I caught the offspring but she is trap savvy and will not go it or sets it off but escapes. There is also something getting into my duck pen, at first it just ate all the eggs I set trap and nothing, so I moved ducks and set out a poison very carefully as not to have any get into the water or soil, or anywhere else. (I used that horrible Goldin stuff I am so afraid of it but was told it would work fast and was relatively painless

) anyway something ate the poison and then there were no issues I never did find a body. I also set rat traps (the snap kind) they get set off but no rats caught.

Now I keep setting the trap with all sorts of food, I tie it down so they cant grab it and I just think either I have 2 different predators like a weasel and the coon and both can get around the Have-A-heart trap.

I want to use leg traps I think but I can not shoot them where I live (I usually drown them in the cage) and I will not relocate them either.

My question is how do I deal with it if I catch it in a leg trap? how can I grab it with out getting bitten and drown it. I would go buy a 22 (I have shot guns and rifles but nothing small caliber) and if I got caught I would be in BIG trouble so I would rather use my pond as the executioner.

Does anyone have trap and or disposal methods they can suggest? Also where is the best place to buy I have been looking on Flemming and their price seems good, I have very little money to spend on this and I already have the cage trap.

Thanks

ugg I was hoping something less messy. and less cruel.

I used a relocation guy many years ago before chickens and before I had received the $550 bill (never do that again!) and he used a combo of leg traps and cages and he relocated them so he had some way of getting them into a box or cage one they were in the trap I just dont know how as I never saw him do it.

Have you tried covering the cage with some leaves or branches so the critter can't see the trap, maybe that would help? Otherwise I would sit out and wait for it then shoot it. If you can get some timmik (sp?) it is great stuff and will kill anything that eats it and a little goes a long way, but you have to have a chemical license here in Texas to get it.

I am way to tired to pull an all nighter and my friend who would is in Afganistan right now. besides I really cant shoot it with the stuff I have. I am in the suburbs and if someone heard the cops would be called for sure.

pitchfork or baseball bat?

My first thought was pitch fork as well. You could always throw a box over it and run a garden hose from the tail pipe of your car.

Those do work well and will kill the animal. You can look up sets for coinbear traps and get ideas on what you can do with them. I like setting them in a 5 gallon bucket. The only down side is if you catch one of your own pets or someone elses in it.

Place the barrel of your new .22 against the body of the animal you are dispatching. It will not make much noise. Drop a few 2x4s before and after the distpatch. .22 shorts work well. Don't buy CB caps, get the true .22 short or .22 long. Do not get the .22 LR.

I have a 5 gallon bucket so maybe this would work. I plan on setting inside the coop since I know it is getting into the pen and figure this way I wont catch my cat or anyone elses. I am sure a cat and dog are unable to get into it only something that climbs can. I will also be adding another line of hot wire in the next week at the top. I figure this way only the guilty party gets the axe an not some poor animal that is just wandering through. The ducks in the meantime will be relocated to a secure site while I set the traps, heck they are going to the secure pen today after I get done covering a dog run with hardware cloth.

As for the 22 I am going to see if my friend has one and may run the leaf blower and do as Dogfish suggests.
