In the Brooder
I wanted chickens. Just after I joined this awesome website (literally one day after) I found out that new chicken flock startups were forbidden in SoCal due to the VND quarantine.
So.... I bought a pair of rabbits instead - Havana bucks - at my local Tractor Supply store to ease my profound disappointment.
So this is what my rabbits want you to know.
My bunny boys have been with me for 5 months now and they are among the cutest, smartest, most inquisitive, delightful and funniest animals I've ever had the privilege to care for. I've cared for a wide variety of animals at one time or another; dogs, cats, birds, fish... just about everything on God's green earth except reptiles.
Rabbits have their own peculiar requirements, and they will communicate them in their own way. A bite, a leg thump, a head butt, or turning their backside to you... It's all good. Just remember its their way of telling you what they feel at the moment. It's up to you to learn their language.
Your responsibility: security, food, hydration, habitable climate and social interaction.
Though exhausting at times, few things give me more joy than caring for my sweet bunnies.
Yes, I still want chickens. Can't wait to start my own flock in my backyard. But for now, I'll settle for a couple of rascally rabbits. They don't lay eggs, but they make me smile every single day.
