A: This has been a question that we’ve received a lot lately. We recommend viewing cracked corn as a treat for chickens. Whole corn is even harder to digest and some hens may not eat it if they are used to a more digestible layer feed. Think of treats and snacks for chickens like candy for kids. If offered a complete meal or a bowl of M&Ms, many kids would choose the M&Ms - but they'd then be lacking on essential nutrients. To provide the necessary nutrients for egg-laying, we make it a goal on our farm to provide 90 percent of the diet through a complete layer feed and then offering treats and snacks sparingly. What 90/10 complete feed and treat combination do you feed your flock? Tell us in the comments below!
