I was out with my chickens and than one of them made this weird sound and walked closer weryly and stretched her head out to look though the fence cracks. All while the other hens did the same thing with that wery sound chickens make when they are nervous or see a preditor. I climbed up on our fence and saw a grey small cat running tords my woods. I chased after it (just so you know I'm not a cat person:/) it ran back in my small deep woods. It seems to be a small cat but it was right near the fence when my chickens made the nervous curious sound.

So, I'm just wondering if this moderate sized cat can some how hurt my chickens. I try to keep my yard preditor proof but I know cats can jump pretty high. Can a smallish cat hurt my big chickens? And also I have 3 dogs.

    I'd say yes.

Especially if your birds are poking their exposed necks thru a fence.

Cats are natural predators and opportunistic hunters. I'd err on the side of caution

My cats are afraid of my chickens. I know cats will try to eat baby chicks but adult chickens will bully my cats.

    Thanks everyone,
I have big and medium sized hens they're wieghts range from 5.5-8.9 pounds although most of them weigh at least 6-7 pounds. I have a big fence up which is 6 feet tall. I'm guessing this cat has been around here for a while because this has happens before in the early spring this year.

My sister said she has seen the cat around a week ago so I guess it's been here for a while. My other question is if this is a house cat will it be out at night hunting? Are cats night hunters?

Cats are most active early morning and dusj but yes they will hunt at night and during the day. Most animals will hunt when they are hungry. And if its a stray then it has even more reason to hunt but i have a cat thats well fed and will kill doves and other birds but she wont kill my chickens she protects them from other animals including stray cats and neighbor cats.

    Thanks,
I think this cat is a house cat and not a stray because I have seen it around and it seems to go back to its house I guess, around sun down. I am not with my chickens in the after noon - weekdays, would they be in danger at those times? And one more question (sorry about all the questions:) ) can a cat jump 5-6 feet? Thanks again
