Rogan and I have had our 7 chicks for a week now. They are so fascinating to watch and interact with. We got 1 BR - a week old, 2 GLW - 4/5 days old, 1 Speckled Sussex- 4/5 days old, 1 Buff Orpington- 4/5 days old. We also got 1 RIR and 1 Ameraucauna both 3/4 days old.
I have noticed a few things about their behavior and am wondering what it means. Does anyone know of a good resource that talks about chick/pullet development? Here are some of the things I am curious about:
1. Some of the chicks will lay down and snuggle into the litter and then a second chick will walk right onto and stand over the first chicks head.
2. Our Speckled Sussex has brilliant coloring - does that mean s/he might be a roo?
3. One of the Golden Laced Wyandottes has something stuck a few cms below her vent and I am wondering if it is possible for her to still have a bit of her yolk cord stuck?
We took them on their second "field trip" to the yard today. They loved kicking up the dirt and pecking the ground for tasty treats.
