Hello! I’m not new to chickens but have never had this happen before. My daughter brought home four two week old chicks they hatched at school. They’re inside, under our heat lamp with plenty of clean shavings, water and chick feed. Today I noticed that one of the chicks leg is swollen, warm and has a cut around the leg. It goes all the way around the leg. I gave her an Epsom bath, dried her off good and put neosporin on the leg. She barely puts weight on it.
I just checked on her and the wound looks worse now. There’s a blister above the cut itself is starting to ooze. I thought maybe something had wrapped itself around it and cut off the circulation, because honestly it looks like that’s the case, but there is nothing there. I held it under a very bright light and don’t see anything at all.
I need help because my daughter has become attached! (Even though these babies are def going out to the coop with the rest of our chickens when they’re big enough!)

Welcome To BYC

Do you have help?

If not, then swaddle her in a towel so you can control her more easily.

I agree, it does look like she's got something around her leg. I see purple, so it may be a purple rubber band or leg band.
I know it may sound scary, but I'd probe around and see if you can't get whatever it is loose and out. The foot swelling like that is an indication of poor circulation.
A few minutes of probing and pain is better than losing the whole foot.

Thank you for responding! It does look like a purple band but I’m pretty sure it’s a muscle or a tendon? They had no bands on them when we got them. And just in case, I just tried to probe around with some tiny tweezers under a bright light and it’s def not a band. I’m at a loss. There is no hair or anything that is visible. Even under a magnifying glass.

Wow, I have no idea what to tell you about that injury.

Good news though, if she does lose the foot, she can probably live a fulfilling life without it. Look up "chicken prosthetic" on this site - you'll find a number of folks' experiences where they got their chicken prosthetic feet or the chickens lived happily without their feet. Most of the time it's due to a frostbite injury in the adult chickens.

The only thing I can think of would be she may have had something around the leg at some point.
I'd monitor it then and see if the swelling continues, if it does, then something is still wrapped around the leg.

Clean the wound with saline or chlorhexidine, then apply your ointment.

Fwiw - this chick had something similar and the OP didn't seem to be able to find anything wrapped, but then it seemed to get worse. A vet visit later, the vet was able to find the band that was embedded and remove it.

Thank you everyone! It surely was a tiny purple band. After another bath I took her outside in the sunlight to get a better look. What I thought was a muscle or tendon was actually the band. I’m so glad I persevered even though I was terrified of hurting her. I’ve sprayed w blue kote and she’s under the heat lamp. Thank you sooooo much!!!

Well Done!
That's good news. I hope there's no lasting damage to the leg.
If she's still really swollen, soak the leg in a warm epsom salts bath daily to help with inflammation. Tend to the wound like you are doing.

Let us know how she is doing, we love getting updates. And Photos.:)
