Hello! My aunt just recently got some lavender Orpington chicks around four weeks ago. They are 12 weeks old and around a week ago one of them started showing signs of snot and watery and droopy eyes, so we quarantined it away from the flock. The chick is still eating and drinking and is a smidge under weight, over all the chick seems very tired. The chick is fairly new to the flock, but the other lavender Orpington chicks seem fine. The poop looks normal and so far we’ve used vetrx, probiotics and electrolytes. If it’s possible we would like to be able to treat this illness at home, any ideas? Thanks! :)

I would suspect that she may have symptoms of a respiratory disease such as MG or coryza. MG can be transmitted through hatching eggs, and both can be spread by a carrier. Does she have bubbles or pus in the eye. Is she sneezing or having rattly breathing? I would clean the eye with saline and apply a dab of either Terramycin eye ointment or plain Neosporin twice a day. MG is better treated with Tylosin and a few other antibiotics.

Sorry to hear about your chick.

Could you post a few more pictures of her eye? But, close-up?

Sadly, most respiratory diseases are highly contagious, so while it is good you have her separated, if she was anywhere near the other chicks, odds would point towards them having it to.

Watery eyes, and some sneezing can indicate a environmental issue such as allergies, or dusty bedding/feed, but given that she's the only one exhibiting these type of symptoms, I would be more inclined to think along the lines of a respiratory disease . There are several that affect poultry, but you're most likely to see Infectious bronchitis, Coryza, or MG (mycoplasma gallisectum). The mildness of her symptoms might make me lean towards IB, but impossible to know without testing.

If you would like to know which respiratory disease if/you're dealing with you can send a swab into your state veterinary lab, or a national one like Zoologix.

Here are some links,

As for her eye's currently, I'd try rinsing them with some saline, wiping off any gunk with damp towel, then applying an ophthalmic ointment like Terramycin using a cotton swab several times a day, as needed.
