This poor little chick was found out in a storm and brought to a local bird rescue. I adopted it today and curious if anyone might know the breed and if you can tell the sex. I tried to match it to hatcheries identification sites but no luck. Sweet little thing. I’m guessing just a few days old. It is mostly black but has a white patch on butt and a little on chest. Legs look mixed color and beak mostly dark. Does have two small white marks nexts to beak.

We could make guesses now, but it’s always much easier and more accurate once they feather out.
Just wondering if anyone recognizes if it is a common breed, there is a 50/50 chance it could be one of our areas feral Ybor chickens, which I’m kind of leaning that way by where the hospital is located. It would make sense for it to be a street chicken that wondered away from mom.

This is pic shows the diversity of our Ybor chickens, if it does end up being one there is no telling what it will look like since none of them look the same.

The problem is there are tons of breeds that look like that as chicks. Until it feathers out we couldn’t know exactly which, and if it is a street chicken it’s most likely a mixed breed.

Update us once it feathers out. It will be much easier to pin point some possibly mixes.

Any chicken that grows up to be black has a chance of looking like that--could include Black Sexlink, Black Australorp, Black Jersey Giant, Black Minorca, and quite a few others.

The chick has a single comb and clean legs (no feathers on the scaly parts of the legs & feet). Both of those are common traits, but they rule out a few rarer breeds. For example, it is NOT a Cochin (which would have feathered legs), and it is NOT a Sumatra (which would have a pea comb.)

The chick appears to not have a crest or beard (two kinds of extra feathers in the head & face area.) Again, that rules out a few of the rarer breeds like Polish, but otherwise doesn't help much.

I agree with the other posters who say we can't tell much until it grows feathers. And if it is a street chicken of mixed ancestry, of course we will not ever be able to find a breed that matches ;)
