I have several week old black australorp chicks. They are all growing like weeds but I have one that has been burying herself in the pine shavings. They have plenty of room and food and water. The brooder is kept at 92 degrees and all of the rest seem to be normal but this one worries me because she will bury herself and the rest will walk on her and peck the shavings off of her back. I am afraid she will get smothered. Has anyone seen chicks do this? Is there something wrong with her? or am I overreacting? Someone with more experience than me please send some advise my way. thank you.

I have only had chickens about 1 1/2 years now & I have not heard of that before.

Do you think she might be "advanced" for her age & is trying to take a dust bath? Poor little thing~~getting stepped on like that.

That's normal behavior - she's just dust bathing. I've had several that did the exact same thing from both my batches (last year and this year).

One will almost be totally buried under the pine shavings and others will walk over her and/or peck shavings off her back.

No worries.. they're just being chickens.
