Chick Sexing

    Does anyone know if it is possible to tell the gender of day old Buff Orpingtons, Barred Rocks, Cochins, or Ameracaunas? is so could you post pictures?

    Barred Rocks are fairly accurately sexed. The females have a more centric and smaller white dot combined with dark legs.

    Buffs and some red chicks can often be sexed by down color. The females will have a dark spot on their head. I've found this to be true when buying straight run chicks. If they have the dark spot they do turn into hens.
    Barred rocks will have either a yellow spot or white spot on their head. I think the males are yellow but not sure.
    I don't have any luck with sexing Americanas until around 2 months old.
    I'm afraid I don't have any pictures but I read the article a year or two ago in Backyard Poultry. [​IMG]

    Try the ol' hat trick. Throw a hat into the floor of the brooder. The pullets will usually scatter, but the cocks will approach the hat. Not 100% accurate, but you know...
