one of my 6 week old chicks snuck out of the coop and my large dog accidentally injured her (she was holding her down with a paw and licking her - thinks she can mama those babies although she is a 100lb dog) the chick has one leg which is clearly injured, she won't use it at all. this happened yesterday and she's been in the hospital inside recovering. today I can see more clearly that both joints, the foot and the next one up (ankle? knee?) are blue (look bruised) and she is holding the leg up and it is kind of flaccid, not very responsive to touch although she complains if I mess with it too much. I am fine to keep her inside for awhile and see if there is any improvement but just would love some support in figuring out how to assess what is going on, any suggestions for treatment or supportive care and if there is a chance she'll improve enough to become part of the flock down the line or if it would be kinder to euthanize her. I've nursed a sick chicken before and found it very very sad when after several weeks of intense nursing (and bonding) it became clear she needed to be culled. thanks!
