We are building our first chicken coop. We are placed it under a cedar tree. Is there any cause for alarm. The cedar tree will be shading the coop. Then we started thinking after building it are there any trees or vegitables that can be harmful to chickens? The cage and pen is on the out skirts of our large vegitable garden as well.

I only know that the oils from cedar wood shavings is toxic to chickens, but I dont' know how much the tree litter that will drop into the coop might affect them.
As far as being next to the veggie garden, that shouldn't be a problem as long as any pesticides or fertilizers used don't drain/leach into their run.
JMO, so take it for what its worth!!

Thanks Mud hen for you reply. I guess we will find out. I don't see us dragging the coop somewhere else. We have started out with six and they are growing larger by the minute. Its amazing how big they get in 3 weeks. They definately need a new home fast. Thanks again, Julia
