I am at a loss as to what happened yesterday. We've used the 5 gallon buckets as nesting boxes for about 4 years now and never had any problems. Yesterday I went out to collect any eggs and when I opened the coop door, the bucket was standing up, upside down which was weird. I went to turn it over and it was heavy. When I flipped it over, one of my easter egger chickens was dead in it. It's neck was all curved over and it honestly looks as though it had gotten stuck in there. Is that even possible? I'm just so upset because it probably died slowly.

    I'll be in the barn!
Subscribing because I use buckets for nests too.... Mine have a food pan base on them though because they used to be used for feed. You might want to consider adding something or fastening the buckets so they can't flip.
    Sorry for your loss :hugs

Thank you. I'm actually going to have dh make nesting boxes out of wood. I'm just too scared that this will happen again.
