This chicken wandered into our chicken yard a few days back, and has stayed with the flock for that time, sleeping in a tree by the coop. Can anybody identify what breed it is?

Crossbred. Very likely a Polish cross.

To me he looks like mostly Appenzeller Spitzhauben...except dark rather than base white with lots of black spangles. (I know there is a black variety, gold spangled, then the silver spangled).

He has the horn comb, forward thrusting crest, grey legs, and correct body type....just too dark in color...like a negative of the silver spangle.

    Someone's project bird?
